The vertical members that make up a wall. Studs carry load from the roof and floors above down to the plates, and give drywall, cabinets and siding something to fasten to.

What a stud actually is

A stud is a piece of dimensional lumber standing on end inside a wall — almost always a 2×4 or a 2×6, spaced at regular intervals along the wall. In a typical Atlanta home you will find 2×4 studs in interior partitions and 2×6 studs in exterior walls, where the extra depth buys room for insulation.

Studs are cut to a precise length so that the finished wall lands at a standard ceiling height. A pre-cut stud for an 8-foot ceiling measures 92⅝″. Add a 1½″ bottom plate and two 1½″ top plates and you land at 96½″ — just over eight feet, which gives drywall room to slip in without binding.

They are not all identical. Inside one wall you will find common studs, king studs, jack studs and cripple studs, all doing different jobs around openings. The common stud is the plain one that simply runs plate to plate.

What it does structurally

A stud is a short column. Its job is to take the weight sitting on the top plate — roof, snow, floor above, furniture, people — and push it straight down into the bottom plate, then into the floor system and eventually the foundation. That chain is called the load path, and studs are one of its links.

Because it is a column, a stud is enormously strong in compression and comparatively weak in bending. That is why we care so much about keeping walls plumb: a stud leaning even slightly is no longer a pure column, and it starts to bend under load rather than simply carrying it.

It is also why notching and boring matter. Cutting a stud to run plumbing or wiring is allowed, but only within limits — the code caps how deep you can notch and how large you can bore. A plumber who over-notches a load-bearing stud has quietly removed a column from your house.

2×4 or 2×6?

The honest answer is that it depends on what the wall has to do.

  • 2×4 exterior walls are the older Atlanta standard and still perfectly adequate structurally for most one and two-story homes. They give you a 3½″ cavity — roughly R-13 to R-15 of batt insulation.
  • 2×6 exterior walls give a 5½″ cavity, room for R-19 to R-21, and more capacity for tall walls and heavy roof loads. They also let you space studs at 24″ on-center in an advanced framing layout, which uses less lumber and leaves more room for insulation.
  • 2×4 interior partitions are standard because they carry little or no load and you want the floor space back. Plumbing walls are the exception — a wall holding a 3″ drain line needs to be 2×6.

If you are building new in metro Atlanta and asking us which to spec, we usually recommend 2×6 exterior walls. The lumber cost difference is small relative to the whole project, and the energy performance follows you for the life of the house.

Crowned, culled and straight

Here is the part most homeowners never hear about. Every stick of lumber has a slight bow along its length. That curve is called the crown.

A crew that cares sights down every stud before it goes in the wall, marks the crown, and installs every stud with the crown facing the same direction. Studs that are badly bowed, twisted, split or wet get thrown out — that is culling. It costs a few minutes per wall and a small amount of wasted lumber.

A crew that skips it produces a wall with a visible wave in it. You will not see it at framing. You will see it after paint, in raking light across a hallway, forever. Culling and crowning is the single clearest difference between framing that photographs well and framing that does not.

We crown and cull every stick before it goes in the wall. It is the cheapest quality decision on the entire job.

What to look at on your own frame

  • Consistent spacing. Pull a tape across the wall. Stud centers should land on 16″ marks all the way down, not drift.
  • Straight lines. Sight down the face of the wall from one corner. It should read flat.
  • Clean notches. Look for over-notched studs where plumbing or HVAC crossed through. Anything more than a quarter of the depth on a bearing wall needs a steel nail plate and a look from someone qualified.
  • Nothing missing. Studs removed for ductwork after the wall was framed are a common problem in older remodels, and a common source of sagging.

Common questions

How far apart are studs in my house?

Almost always 16 inches on-center, meaning 16 inches from the center of one stud to the center of the next. Some newer or advanced-framed homes use 24 inches on-center. Garages, older homes and additions can vary, so it is always worth verifying rather than assuming.

Can I remove a single stud to run a duct?

Sometimes, but not casually. In a non-load-bearing partition it is usually fine with proper header and blocking. In a load-bearing wall, removing a stud means the load it carried has to go somewhere else, and that needs to be designed. Call before you cut.

Why do my walls sound hollow between studs?

Because they are. A framed wall is mostly empty cavity between studs, holding insulation, wiring and plumbing. That hollow sound between solid points is exactly how you find studs by knocking.

Are steel studs better than wood?

For residential framing in Atlanta, wood is the practical choice: cheaper, easier to fasten to, and every trade after us knows how to work with it. Steel studs make sense in commercial work and in some basement partitions where moisture is a concern.
